Biogas production was promoted since the '80s. Due to inappropriate choices of construction materials, the majority of the first installations are out of order as a consequence of malfunction or weak economic performances. Steel and other iron materials were affected by the gas and quickly destroyed by the H2S. Therefore the enthusiasm surrounding this practice was shut down. Just in Denmark and Germany a significant number of plants continued to be exploited. The technical problems were still present but the economy was supportive since they were using the digestate for agricultural purposes. That's how the users were encouraged and motivated to keep looking for solutions and eventually starting replacing some of the materials and equipment.
